Cluster Flies – what are they and why are they in my motorhome or caravan door seals and rubbers?
Have you ever come back to your motorhome or caravan and opened the cab or habitation door to discover loads of flies in the door rubber?
Well don’t panic! They are called cluster flies, due to the way they cluster together. They normally live in fields and, as the weather changes, they are attracted to white surfaces. This is because it attracts sunshine and warmth.
If your motorhome or caravan is facing south and it’s in the sun getting warm, you’ll probably see them on the side wall. As the sun sets and the temperature drops they will be drawn together in a crevice to keep warm. In the morning, as the sun comes up and the temperature rises, the flies may crawl out and fly away again, off to enjoy their day.
What to do about flies in your motorhome or caravan doors?
People get very concerned about these flies and worry that they are a consequence of poor hygiene, or that perhaps some small creature has died inside. It’s not true. It is totally normal to see cluster flies and they are a natural phenomena of being in a rural location, like we are here in North Somerset. The weather is also a factor too.
So if you open your caravan or motorhome door and find lots of flies, don’t panic that that’s the first thing. You can kill them with a fly spray if you want to. You can also vacuum them up or just brush them away. Just keep in mind that they often return to the same place every night, so it may become a tiresome battle.
It is also perfectly okay to welcome them! They’ve chosen your motorhome or caravan to keep them safe and warm, just as you did.
So don’t worry about the flies in your motorhome or caravan door rubbers and seals
They are called cluster flies. They are no cause for concern, and they are a natural phenomena of being out in the countryside.
